Animal resettlement charities today called on any rescued animals to enter the country with the necessary vaccination documents after the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) detected the illegal movement of Ukrainian dogs, endangering the status quo in the UK.
Border checks by the APHA showed a shipment of 19 animals imported by a rescue charity traveling with fake rabies documents. The dogs were transformed: cared for by British families, but local authorities և APHA are now looking for animals to protect public health և to ensure we are free from rabies. The animals are quarantined until a further decision is made on their risk of disease.
Strict UK animal control strategies are key to our unparalleled animal health standards. We have long been free from rage, we want to stay that way, we want to protect the public from diseases, pathogens that can be brought to the UK by animals that have not received proper health care travel.
The Director General of Veterinary Medicine of Great Britain Christine Midlmis said:
Examinations confirmed that the animals did not receive the necessary blood tests to enter the UK. We are taking swift action to limit the risk of spreading the disease by quarantining all animals involved until further notice. We are grateful for the cooperation of the households involved; we will encourage the public to contact us for any information they may have.
Animals, without the right vaccinations, pose a real threat to both our pets and humans, while affecting the rabies-free status we have for many years.
Earlier this month, the government introduced a new ambulance for those fleeing Ukraine with their pets. Using an emergency license, people fleeing the country can bring their pets to the UK with all quarantine costs fully covered.
There are a limited number of quarantine facilities in the UK և We will give priority to those who have fled Ukraine who want to take their pets with them, rather than bringing the animals on a commercial basis, including the introduction of rescuers. Commercial importincluding rescue imports, must be followed normal process : Ensure proper vaccination documentation.
Before arriving, people leaving Ukraine or their carrier should contact the Animal and Plant Health Agency at the following address: email@example.com: or call +44 3000 200 301 option 2. They will then be able to get their emergency license approved, arrange for any quarantine needed to complete the rabies risk management process.
If you think you have received a Ukrainian pet from this charity, please contact the APHA Helpline on 03000 200 301 to make sure they can be quarantined as soon as possible.
