Ara Cardell has been appointed Interim Director General of the Office of Competition and Markets (CMA) from her current position of Chief Legal Adviser in the industry body.

She will take on the role temporarily when current CEO Andrea Cascelli leaves in July.

Cardell has been appointed business secretary by Quasi Quarteng, while the British government is beginning the process of finding a permanent replacement for the outgoing boss.

CMA is a non-ministerial department responsible for competition and consumer law and investigating mergers and markets.

Quarteng said: “Sarah’s experience and expertise provide a solid foundation for the CMA at a time when their work to help people make the most of their money is very important to consumers across the country.

“I thank Andrea for his achievements at the CMA. These include providing hundreds of millions of pounds to consumers canceled events and holidays during the pandemic, helping patients and the Health Service, fighting unfairly rising prices for life-saving drugs, and establishing the CMA as a world leader in digital market regulation».

Cardell was appointed chief legal counsel at the CMA in September 2013. She heads the Legal Service and Policy, as well as international directorates that provide legal and policy advice through CMA functions.

She also has the responsibility of executive management to establish a division of the CMA digital markets.

Cardel said: “The CMA’s work to promote competition has never been so important to ensure that prices stay as low as possible and support growth and innovation in our economy.

«Under Andrea’s leadership, the CMA has become the world’s leading competitive body, bringing real benefits to consumers and businesses across the UK. I am ready to continue this progress by working with our dedicated and talented teams across the UK. ”
