Founded in 2020 by tech entrepreneur Santosh Sahu, Charac’s mission is to help community pharmacies provide more primary and secondary care. With more than 7,200 independent pharmacies unable to offer digital services, the platform simplifies customer access to local pharmacies by allowing them to skip the line, save time, and access and reorder all their prescriptions online. Additionally, by providing digital consultations with community pharmacists, pressures on the NHS are alleviated, while addressing threats posed by digital competitors, which could see pharmacies closing on highways.

The £ 1 million investment will enable Charac and Royal Mail to leverage the strong levels of trust that postal staff and pharmacists enjoy within the communities they serve and will ensure that pharmacies remain a cornerstone of bustling main roads and an invaluable provider of frontline healthcare products and services, including vital consultations. As the UK’s only designated universal service provider, Royal Mail is at the heart of every community and is trusted to deliver to over 31 million addresses across the UK, at least six days a week. Royal Mail already has a strong presence in the healthcare market, providing most of the prescriptions ordered online.

Charac integrated the first pharmacy-focused patient relationship management system, NHS approved and integrated with its e-prescription services. This platform complements what pharmacists do in our communities by allowing them to provide an appointment management system where they can have consultations via video or phone and allow patients to reorder prescriptions via the app. By encouraging customers to access services through the platform, pharmacists free up time to focus on delivering new services that generate higher revenue and margins to the local communities they already serve, while reducing reliance on declining, low-margin NHS prescriptions .

With over 10,000 patients per week referred for a consultation booked with a pharmacist following a call to NHS 111 and primary care physicians caring for 2,200 patients each due to staff shortages (10% increase over five years), never has there been such a pivotal time for pharmacists and patients to take advantage of relationship building technology.

Charac’s online reservation-consultation function not only allows customers to avoid frustrating lines at the pharmacy or family doctor, but also allows the pharmacist to better manage their time and resources. A video consultation facility helps classify patient needs while providing a more comfortable environment in which to deal with intimate symptoms. Once registered with Charac, customers will be able to manage existing repeat prescriptions, send messages to the pharmacist, schedule future activities, such as annual flu shots, and browse the various services offered by their pharmacy, all from the comfort of their home and in the way they prefer. .

Charac aims to enroll over 1,000 UK pharmacies over the next 12 months by expanding its geographic presence beyond current cities, including London, Manchester and Birmingham, and targeting multiple, independent small pharmacies, which account for nearly 40% of pharmacies in the United Kingdom.

The announcement also sees the addition of Stefan Kulik, managing director of Royal Mail’s Health division, to the board of Charac.
