Global survey suggests firms need to re-examine their digital transformation approach to help employees better adapt to change
A new world study ó Pegasystems Inc., in relation to business complexity situation it was found that almost three in four employees (71%) feel that the complexity of their job continues to rise as customer demands increase. At the same time, employees at all levels report feeling overwhelmed with information, systems and processes, making it difficult for them to adapt to these new challenges and meet the increasing needs of their customers.
As the pandemic came to an end, most businesses rushed to deploy digital transformation projects to help solve this new reality. But survey results from more than 4,000 employees in America, EMEA, and APAC suggest that these initiatives did not go far enough or were implemented in silos without a unified vision. In fact, 42% of respondents think digital transformation may even be worth it increases the complexity of their job – a surprising attitude that should cause some organizations to re-examine their digital approach.
But before they can redefine a new strategy to reduce business complexity, organizations must first understand the rapidly growing key drivers. Survey respondents identified a mix of organizational, technological and societal factors that add to the complexity of their jobs, and include:
- Information overload management, 90% of respondents reported
- Internal process navigation and bureaucracy (89%)
- Managing projects, teams and people (88%)
- Keeping up with rapid change (87%)
- Lack of resources (86%)
How can businesses better deal with these drivers of complexity? According to survey respondents, they should start by breaking down technology silos. The presence of redundancies / different systems was the most motivating technology issue in their organization, chosen by 43% of respondents. When asked what businesses can do to make their technology experience less complex, their main remedy was to use systems that integrate more easily with other technologies (40% of respondents chose them). This suggests that firms need to take a more unified approach to digital transformation compared to fragmented projects implemented alone.
The survey also highlighted how the pandemic specifically contributed to accelerating business complexity in a number of ways:
- Overall, the majority of employees (56%) feel that the business pandemic will become more complex in the long run.
- One in three employees (35%) think that hybrid work arrangements make business more complicated. When asked why, 38% said that hybrid work makes it more challenging to set boundaries between their work and personal lives.
- Nearly one in three employees (32%) think that the pandemic makes it more difficult to hire the right people, and 61% say that their company cannot attract talent with the necessary technological skills to do the jobs properly.
With the pandemic driving rapid change, many employees want their organization to adapt even faster: one in three reported that their organization is moving too slowly to respond to change. But despite its own complexity, technology remains key to streamlining their job functions, as 98% agree that technology is critical to doing their jobs properly.
