More than 30 people died after a bus heading for a wedding that plunged into a flooded river in Kenya.

Horrible footage shows the moment the driver was swept away after trying to cross the fast-flowing water across the bridge over the Enziu River, 125 miles east of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

The bus took the church choir and other delights to the wedding yesterday. At that time, the bus sank below the surface of the torrent as the driver tried to navigate the submerged bridge.

I heard both passengers and passers-by screaming for help, and people were in a hurry to get rid of them.

The twelve passengers managed to scramble safely, but most of the people on the affected bus couldn’t escape before being swallowed by the muddy tide.

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu said 31 have been recovered by military divers since yesterday.

However, she warned that more casualties could occur as search and rescue operations continued.

She said, “Today we were able to retrieve seven. We still have more bodies on the bus.”

“It’s really, very sad, we lost a lot of lives,” Ngilu added.

It is unknown how many passengers were on board when the bus flowed into the Enjiu River.

Witnesses said the driver was close to the other side when he stopped to negotiate the river and was swept under the swirling stream of the bus.

President Uhuru Kenyatta condolences to the victims’ families and urged Kenyans to pay attention to the road during the rainy season.

A statement from his office said: “The president wants to remind Kenyans across the country to pay attention to government recommendations not to try to cross a swollen river, especially during the current rainy season.”

Recently, unusual heavy rains have hit many parts of Kenya.
