London-based truckmaker Tevva unveiled its first hydrogen-electric truck, covering 310 miles (499 km).
According to the company, the truck will be the first such vehicle to be manufactured, designed and mass-produced in the UK.
The 7.5 tonne truck, to be unveiled today at the Road Transport Expo in Warwickshire, will be manufactured in Tilbury, London. This will be followed by 12 tonne and 19 tonne swaps, which are expected next year.
“Our initial focus is on trucks that do the job, eliminate the range of issues and save money. The green focus is not the main focus because I believe that is the best way to decarbonise the world, ”said Tevva CEO and founder Asher Bennett RATN.
Bennett compared this approach to making solar power cheaper than coal as people are more likely to choose the most financially sensible energy source.
Hydrogen technology is still a new field, with only a few hydrogen powered vehicles currently on the market.
Hydrogen fuel cells combine oxygen and hydrogen atoms to produce electricity, with water and a small amount of heat as by-products instead of harmful emissions.
The main advantage of incorporating hydrogen into an electric truck is the energy density, which means that the system and energy do not add much weight compared to a conventional battery. Some people see this as having great potential for truck fleets that make frequent long-distance trips.
Filling hydrogen also requires less time than electricity because it comes in the form of a gas and can be added in a time like a diesel truck.
Tevva hydrogen cells
Despite the benefits of hydrogen power, a hydrogen powered truck is not currently fully viable. Bennett explained that the fuel is expensive because it is not widely used in transportation, and is not offered at many fueling stations.
Hydrogen to electric fuel cells is not cheap, either.
“We are using the way we approach it [hydrogen] as an energy reserve system, not as a primary energy system, ”said Bennett.
The address comes shortly after Tevva, which takes its name from the Hebrew word for nature, £ 41m raised to accelerate the production of its 7.5 tonne all-electric and electric-hydrogen trucks. To date Tevva has raised over $ 140m (£ 115m) in funding.
“It simply came to our notice then[just a] battery because without the hydrogen, you probably would not want to use a maximum of 50 to 70% of your battery and no one is putting too much risk in the world of trucks and going to the limits, because of the repatriation of a truck that is not fun to run out of energy full of goods, ”said Bennett.
The Tevva hydrogen-electric truck manages consumption through an on-board and cloud-based system.
Other Tevva hydrogen vehicles?
Bennett said hydrogen was aimed at improving the electrification of trucks, adding that the technology inside cars is unnecessary.
According to Bennett, there are few public hydrogen fuel stations in the UK, but he expects a driver to refuel hydrogen typically around twice a week.
“I do not want to replace the diesel trucks on the short routes,” he said.
Asked if he would develop various hydrogen vehicles in the future, Bennett said the company had no interest in vans and collections but said Tevva had the technical capacity to make a 40 tonne semi – trailer.
However, the refueling infrastructure and fees would be required for the economy to work, he said.
