About 700 British Airways Heathrow’s chief hub is expected to leave next month after an overwhelming majority voted in favor of industrial action for wages.
Members of the GMB the union voted 95% for the strike. The turnout was 80 percent. Unite members are also expected to vote for the strike.
The GMB union says the members who voted for the strike are primarily low-paid women.
They demand that BA restore the 10 percent reduction taken from them during the pandemic. They claim that “the pay of the bosses has returned to the level of the pandemic”, and Luis Gallega – CEO of the parent company BA, IAG – in the queue for a payment of 4.9 million pounds this year.
In addition, the unions note, these veterans are subjected to verbal and sometimes physical abuse by passengers with frequent confrontations.
Nadine Houghton, GMB’s national officer, said: “Because of the gloomy predictability, vacationers are facing massive disruptions thanks to British Airways’ swindler.
“BA has tried to offer our members crumbs from the table in the form of a 10 percent one-time bonus payout, but it doesn’t work.
“Our members need to recover the 10 percent they stole from them last year, with a full salary and a 10 percent bonus paid to other colleagues.
“GMB members in Heathrow have suffered vague abuses as they grapple with travel chaos caused by staff shortages and IT failures.
“At the same time, their salaries were reduced during the soulless policy of BA and return to work.
“It is not too late to save the summer holidays – other BA employees have canceled the salary reduction, do the same with the ground and registration staff, and this production action may be violated in the application.”
Since the employer must give two weeks’ notice of the production action, the termination may begin on July 8.
A statement from GMB said: “The dates of the industrial events will be confirmed in the coming days, but will probably be at the peak of the summer holidays.”
Insiders have suggested that the first strike could take place on the weekend of July 9 and 10, coinciding with the first weekend of summer vacation in many public schools in England.
One BA employee said the intention was to disrupt high-cost customer travel. “They’re going straight to the BA Club World demographic,” the source said.
A British Airways spokesman said: “We are very disappointed with the outcome and the fact that the unions have chosen this course of action.
“Despite extremely difficult conditions and losses of more than £ 4 billion, we made an offer of a 10 per cent payment, which was accepted by most other colleagues.
“We are fully committed to working together to find a solution because to secure our customers and rebuild our business we need to work as a team. We will, of course, keep our customers informed of what this means for them as the situation progresses. ”
The Independent understands that the 10 percent offered by BA was a one-time payment that will not be consolidated into a basic payment.
