Brexit. Dominique Raab Says Fixing Northern Ireland Protocol ‘Cannot Be Delayed’ as Stormont Power Distribution Deal Suspicious | Political news

The amendment to the Northern Ireland Protocol “cannot be delayed,” he said, amid fears that progress in the distribution of power would remain deadlocked after last Thursday’s election.

Dominique Raab told Sky News’ Sophie Ridge on Sunday that stability was “at stake” because of problems with the protocol that governs Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit trade arrangements.

The deal guarantees that there will be no return to the hard border with the Republic of Ireland, but it creates an effective border in the Irish Sea between “the rest of Great Britain” and Northern Ireland.

The stalemate over efforts to reconsider the deal led to last Thursday’s congressional election, which saw Sinn Fein become the largest party for the first time.

The trade union DUP has said it will not participate in the government-sharing power with Sinn Fein until progress is made on the protocol.

Mr Raab told Sky News that Britain wanted to see “stability” in the new executive branch.

But he said “stability is at stake, if you will, because of the problems with the Northern Ireland Protocol, something that affects entire communities.”

He added. “It’s clear that the Northern Ireland Protocol needs to be ratified … it cannot be delayed.

“We will not get the executive power that the people of Northern Ireland need until they do.”

The protocol was a deal agreed upon by Boris Johnson’s government, but in recent months the prime minister and other senior ministers have voiced a desire to renegotiate it, not ruling out that Britain would act unilaterally to stop it.

Mr. Raab said. “If it had been implemented with flexibility, in good faith, in the business interests of the communities of Northern Ireland, it would not have been sincerely used as a political tool that it has, I do not think we are. I would have the same level of problems.

“But the point of discussion has passed, we must see that it has been corrected, the government has committed to correct it.”

Mr Raab said this would be done “preferably through negotiations”.

But he added: “If not, we must take steps to ensure that the economic integrity of Northern Ireland և trade with the rest of the United Kingdom և frankly, the constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom is protected». “

“It is clear now. “If the results of that election in Northern Ireland become clear, it can not be postponed.”

The deadline for making changes to the protocol is set – it will be weeks or months, Mr. Raab said “no more than that.”

He declined to say whether such an action would be taken in the Queen’s speech this week.

Irish Minister for Europe Thomas Byrne said the “overwhelming majority” of members elected to the Stormont Assembly in Northern Ireland wanted to implement the protocol, and called on Britain to “engage with the European Union in a renewed way”.

Mr Raab also allegedly downplayed the prospect of a referendum on the annexation of Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland after Sinn Féin called for preparations for such a vote.

He said. “If you look at the results of Northern Ireland, 58% of the people voted in favor of either the parties that support the union or the parties that do not support the constitutional change, that’s the message of the people of Northern Ireland.”
