However, a press release issued on Tuesday showed that Baffert, who intends to run his horse at Preakness on Saturday, may now know where the failed test came from.

Baffert’s statement said: “Following Santa Anita Derby, Medina Spirit developed dermatitis at his trailing edge.

“I had him checked by a veterinarian who recommended the use of an antifungal ointment called Otomax.

“The veterinarian’s recommendation was to apply this ointment daily to relieve the horse, heal the dermatitis and prevent it from spreading.

“My barn followed this recommendation and Medina Spirit was treated with Otomax once a day until the day before the Kentucky Derby.

“Yesterday I was informed that one of the substances in Otomax is betamethasone.

“It’s unclear if this is the source of the 21 picograms allegedly found in post-race blood samples of the Medina Spirit, but investigations are ongoing, but from horse pharmacology experts. It was said that this could explain the test results.

“That’s why I wanted to be frank about this fact as soon as I knew this information.

“As I said, my investigation is ongoing and I’m not sure if this ointment was the cause of the test results or if the test results are accurate as they have not yet been confirmed by the split samples. Hmm.

“But again, it is said that small amounts of findings, such as 21 picograms, may be consistent with the application of this type of ointment.

“I will continue to investigate and remain transparent.”
