Batley murderer’s decision increased

Six men were extended in prison with the intervention of the then Secretary of Justice. Usman Karolia (20 years old), Raja Nawaz (19 years old), Ahmed Karolia (24 years old), Nabeel Nasser (19 years old), Nikash Hussain (17 years old), Irfan Hussain (18 years old) on June 21, 2020 He attacked three men violently.

They killed Bradley Gledhill. Bradley Gledhill was stabbed to death, and was beaten, kicked, and stamped while dying on the ground. His two companions were also repeatedly stabbed.

All six were convicted of Bradley’s murder. The four were convicted of attempted murder of his friend Joel Ramsden (Karolia, Karolia, Nazir, Irfan Hussain). Usman Karolia was convicted of causing serious physical harm with the intention of Kasey Hall in the Leeds Crown Court. On July 30, 2021, they were each sentenced to the following sentences:

  • Usman Karolia – Life imprisonment for at least 21 years
  • Ahmed Karolia – Life imprisonment for at least 16 years
  • Raja Nawaz – Life imprisonment for at least 12 years
  • Nabeel Nazeer – Life imprisonment for at least 11 years
  • Irfan Hussain – Life Imprisonment for a minimum of 11 years
  • Nikash Hussain – Life imprisonment for at least 10 years

Following the decision, the then Secretary of Justice referred the decision to the Court of Appeals under an unreasonably generous decision (ULS) scheme.

On December 6, 2021, after a joint hearing, the Court of Appeals increased the following decisions:

  • Usman Karolia – Life imprisonment for at least 27 years
  • Ahmed Karolia – Life imprisonment for at least 21 years
  • Raja Nawaz – Life imprisonment for at least 16 years
  • Nabeel Nazeer – Life imprisonment for at least 16 years
  • Irfan Hussain – Life Imprisonment for at least 16 years
  • Nikash Hussain – Life imprisonment for at least 13 years

After a joint hearing at the Court of Appeals, the Secretary of Justice, Alex Chalk QCMP, said:

These men killed Bradley Gledhill and cruelly and meaninglessly attacked the victims. Knife crime is a tragedy that causes immense misery to humankind, and we are pleased that the Court of Appeals has determined today that it is appropriate to increase their judgment.
