Banksy’s artwork, which became famous for “shredder itself” at the last auction, sold for a record £ 18.5m.
Love is in the Bin was hit by Sotheby’s in London today-and it sold well beyond its £ 4-6 million guide price.
The original work, titled “Girl With Balloon,” sold for £ 1m in 2018.
However, the painting self-destructed shortly after sale and became one of the most famous stunts of anonymous artists.
Hammer fell at £ 16m today, but after the price of Sotheby’s, the price was £ 18,582,000.
Anonymous buyers at the 2018 auction retained this work. That’s a very healthy profit of around £ 15m.
Sotheby’s said the “obsolete remote-controlled shredder mechanism” is still within the framework.
“Today, this work is considered the heir to the worshiped heritage of dissident art,” said Alex Branchk, chairman of the company’s contemporary art.
He added that the work is “Banksy’s ultimate artwork and a true icon of recent art history.”
