From March to April, the Olympiad reached thousands of young people across Bangladesh, providing in-depth training to 250 young leaders on biodiversity, planetary boundaries, climate justice, and the environment. Young people from Bangladesh aged 14 to 18 were eligible to participate.

Acting British High Commissioner Javed Patel congratulated the students on their success

“Climate action is a priority for the United Kingdom. I’m glad we supported this year ‘s National Earth Olympiad by helping to create the next generation of climate managers in Bangladesh. It is very important that young people have the right to be key stakeholders in promoting local, national, regional and global change. “I’m inspired by the young people here today. I’m sure their drive and commitment to fighting the climate crisis will help them do just that.”

Professor Dr. Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed, the host of the National Earth Olympiad in Bangladesh, one of the faculty members of the Department of Geology, University of Dhaka, said:

“The National Olympiad of the country has been taking place since 2012 – it was one of the first Olympiads, which focused on geological and environmental sciences. The competition played an important role in involving students in the urgency of the climate and environmental crisis. More than 10,000 students have participated in this competition since 2012, and in recent years the winners of the Bangladesh Olympics have also won high awards and medals at the International Earth Olympiad. I strongly believe that the collective action we must take to resolve this climate crisis will require scientists, scientists-practitioners who can guide policy action և technological innovation. The National Olympiad of the country is a potential catalyst in this process. “

The founder of the Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative և Mr. Shamir Shehab, Laureate of the Queen’s 2015 Young Leaders Award, said:

“Today, against the backdrop of Bangladesh և environmental, ecological and climate crises approaching the world, the Bangladesh Youth Environment Initiative seeks to develop the next generation of stewards to overcome this global crisis. Through more than 10 years of environmental work, the organization has enabled young people from all over Bangladesh to strive for a more sustainable, just and flexible planet Earth.

“The Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative will continue its journey of educating, empowering more young people to take climate action in the coming years, focusing on the core: providing justice; justice for the most vulnerable, the most marginalized from climate change.”
