Bajrang Punia gets UK visa for CWG, will travel to US to train ahead of games

New Delhi [India]July 9 (ANI): Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia has received his visa to travel to Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Bajrang, who will travel to the US for training ahead of the CWG, received his US visa earlier this month, but his UK visa was pending, preventing him from traveling to the US for training.

The Ministry of Sports, through the Ministry of External Affairs, contacted the British High Commission to obtain a UK visa for Bajrang, which has now been received. On several occasions, the MEA has consistently assisted the Sports Ministry in facilitating entry clearance for athletes traveling abroad for competition and training ahead of the CWG.

Bajrang will leave India this weekend, along with wrestler Deepak Punia. They will train at the University of Michigan until July 30, after which both will travel to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The Union Sports Ministry’s Targeted Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) has facilitated the journey of discovery. The training period in the US will be useful in preparation for the Commonwealth Games and upcoming major competitions, such as the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade in September.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has funded 111 foreign exhibitions in various sports ahead of the CWG after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. (ANI)
