BA.2 is now the dominant option in the United States as the funding battle continues

BA.2 accounted for more than 70 percent of Covid-19 cases in New York City, which was at the forefront of previous increases during the pandemic.

While the new sub-variant continues to spread, the total number of Covid-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations is still falling in the US, according to the CDC, an average of 27,775 new cases and 690 new deaths were recorded daily as of March 27th. The agency estimates that more than 91 percent of the country remains in the low-risk zone.

Still, the Biden administration is ringing alarm bells and warning that it is not ready if a new wave falls on the country if BA.2 or another future option flies in numbers like the one America saw this winter with Omicron.

The administration has asked Congress for $ 22.5 billion to boost supplies of U.S. vaccines, treatments and testing if that happens, but lawmakers have refused to say how much to spend and how to pay for another round of Covid-19 aid.

President Joe Biden’s 2023 budget, released Monday, called for $ 127 billion for the Department of Health and Human Services, including $ 81.7 billion for pandemic preparedness and bio-defense.

That figure does not include the more urgent tranche of aid Covid-19 that the White House wants from Congress. HHS Secretary Xavier Becker described the budget funding requirements as “for the long-term readiness we need to get the job done at Covid urgently,” he said at a briefing on Monday.

BA.2 may spread rapidly, but that does not necessarily mean it will cause more harm or cause another massive increase, says David Daud, an epidemiologist at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Hopkins.

“This virus, like any virus, has evolutionary pressure to become more contagious,” Dowd said. But he says: “There is no pressure to make it more deadly. He just wants to be saved. It’s not there we kill. “
