“I am going to press ahead with my candidacy and I believe I am the best person to help our party defeat Keir Starmer and defeat Labor at the general election,” the Richmond MP said.

After the clash televised on Channel 4, Mr Sunak’s campaign team said he had “clearly won” the debate.

A preliminary poll of 1,159 viewers by Opinium placed him in second place, with 24 percent saying he was the strongest performer, behind Tom Tugendhat, who is considered a contender, on 36 percent.

International Trade Secretary Ms Mordon is tied for third with former Equalities Secretary Cammy Baden on 12 per cent, while Foreign Secretary Ms Truss is fifth on just 7 per cent.
