No one expected him to put money in his pocket when the Danish museum lent £ 60,000 to a respected artist to recreate his old work of art using banknotes. ..

Jens Haaning has been commissioned by the Kunsten Museum in Aalborg for an exhibition named “Work it Out”.

He was asked to duplicate two works using Danish krone and the euro to represent the Danish and Austrian annual salaries.

But when the gallery staff unpacked the work, they were stunned to find two empty glass frames where no money was found.

In addition, the package contained a note that Herning had pocketed money to create a new conceptual work of art called “Take the Money and Run.”

In an email to the museum displayed next to the empty frame, he said: Instead of exhibiting two works, 14 and 11 years old, I decided to create a new work for the exhibition.

“This work is based on and corresponds to both the concept of your exhibition and the work you originally planned.”

Kunsten wants to return the cash to Haaning, but he refuses.

The museum’s director, Lasse Anderson, says he’s just as confused as anyone else about what happened to the committee.

The museum is currently considering whether to report him to the police if he does not return it by the end of January.

In an interview with Danish radio, Herning confirmed that he did not intend to comply with his contract and added that recreating his old work would “out of his pocket”.

He said:’The job is that I took their money. It’s not theft. It’s a breach of contract, and breach of contract is part of the job.

“I encourage other people who have working conditions as dire as I do to do the same.

“If they have a job, aren’t paid, and are asked to pay to actually go to work, grab what you can and defeat it.”
