And the heat wave in the Arctic continues, with the UK Health and Safety Agency’s (UKHSA) cold weather warning extended until Tuesday. NHS trusts are advising people not to go out early in the morning or late at night, when the ice is at its thickest.
UKHSA’s Dr Agostinho Souza said the amber cold warning for the whole of England would be extended, adding: “This weather poses a serious threat to the health of some people, including those aged over 65 and those with pre-existing conditions. “It could have a significant impact,” he added. Therefore, it is important to continually check in with your most vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors. ”
The AA also advised against “non-essential travel” in areas most affected by snow and ice and urged motorists to use “extreme caution” on dangerous roads.
Thursday night marked the coldest temperature of the winter for the second consecutive year, with temperatures dropping to -14.5 degrees Celsius (5.9 degrees Fahrenheit) in Altnahalla, Sutherland, on the Scottish plateaus.
The coldest place in the UK was Shap, Cumbria, which recorded -11.5C (11.3F).
