After a period of turmoil characterized by supply chain disruption and pandemic economic challenges, Apple’s smartphone market share has recorded growth to stand out from competitors. Over the past year, American tech giants have recorded the highest market share growth while cutting back on the dominance of its closest competitors like Samsung.
Data presented by Burga show that Apple’s estimated global smartphone market share increased by 20% between 2021 R1 and 2022 R1, from 15% to 18%. Samsung recorded the second highest market share growth of 9.09%, from 22% to 24%. Despite Apple recording the highest gains, the American tech giant tracks Samsung in overall global market share.
Other smartphone manufacturers recorded a 20% reduction in market share, led by Oppo and Vivo. Xiaomi’s share also fell 7.14%, while other manufacturers have seen their own share fall by 3.57%.
Apple is growing despite relatively expensive smartphones
The research tries to explain how Apple managed to flip the scale and record growth in market share, considering that other competing manufacturers are offering devices at low prices. According to the research report:
“Interestingly enough, Apple is gaining ground in market share despite the company’s smartphones being considered to be primarily expensive compared to competitors. It can be assumed that the devices are becoming more attractive as the company uses its loyal consumer base which is attracted by the regular new features of the devices and the innovative overall designs. ”
In the coming quarters, smartphone market share is likely to change depending on how companies respond to factors such as semiconductor shortages. Manufacturers who take mitigation measures such as in-house semiconductor design are likely to emerge.
In addition, manufacturers may adapt to new trends such as designing budget-specific devices that target specific markets.
