EastEnders and On The Buses star Anna Karen has died in a house fire in east London.

Firefighters were called to Windsor Road, Ilford, shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

A statement from the London Fire Brigade said: “Part of the ground floor of a house with a medium terrace was damaged by fire. Unfortunately, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Three fire engines and about 20 firefighters from the Ilford and Barking fire stations were present at the incident.

“The cause of the fire is being clarified.”

The 85-year-old actress was best known for her role in the ’70s comedy On the Buses.

Karen’s agent Shane Collins told the PA news agency: “This is a terrible tragedy. I loved Anna. I have known her since I was a child and she was the most beautiful lady.

“I’ve had the privilege of taking care of her as her agent for the last few years.”

She also appears in EastEnders as Aunt Sal, Peggy Mitchell’s sister, played by one of her great friends, Barbara Windsor.

The buses include Anna Karen, Doris Hare, Reg Varney, Michael Robbins (LR)

An EastEnders spokesman said: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Anna Karen has died … Our love and thoughts are with Anna’s family and friends.”

Scott Mitchell, husband of the late Lady Barbara he said he was “desperately sad and shocked” to hear about Karen’s death.

He said: “Barbara and Anna have been friends all their lives and Anna has always been what I thought was Barbara’s only real boyfriend.

“Anna and I kept in touch after Barbara’s death and she was a good friend and support to me when things were difficult and we talked a few weeks ago.

“It was a fun chat and I thought about how optimistic she sounds. We always shared memories and jokes about Barbara.

“Anna was one of three I asked to speak at Barbara’s funeral. I will remember her candid conversation, great humor and intelligence. May he rest in peace”.

Karen co-starred with Barbara Windsor in EastEnders

Singer Cheryl Baker tweeted: “I just heard the terrible news that my great partner, #AnnaKaren, died in a house fire.

“What a horrible way to die, I can’t bear to think about it. I adored her – she was an absolute treasure, both on and off screen.”

EastEnders star Rita Simons, who plays Roxy Mitchell, added: “I just heard the terrible news about the beautiful Anna Karen. Terrifying and horrible and so sad.

“She was one of the best. Sleep well, beautiful Anna. I send all my love to her family and friends.”
