“I was trying to focus on getting a lot of returns, but I was trying to put pressure on him when I got the chance, and I think it worked.
“In most cases, I provided a pretty good service and lost a bit of rhythm at the end of the first set and at the beginning of the second set, but went back nicely and did a smart match.
“I was still creating opportunities after the breakdown, so when I returned to the second set, I was a little more confident and a little more aggressive. That was the match for me.”
Murray, who won second place in Metz in 2007, then faces one of Poland’s top seeds Hubert Hurkacz, World number 13, or French Lucas Pouille.
“For me, this period of the last few years has been the most I’ve actually played,” added Murray, who pushed the world’s third place. Stefanos Tsitsipas Five sets in the first round of the US Open last month.
“My body feels good and I’m starting to get a little more confident in each match and I’m starting to see the points and how I want to play them. That’s great.
“I’ve been a little confused over the past year and haven’t seen how the points are evolving. This has always been a powerful part of my game.
“When I felt that way, I felt so uncomfortable on the court that I started to get it back and the results came out and my tennis is getting better.”
Murray, 34, said:
“If you want to make it to the finals, it’s not easy, but you’re playing well and you have a chance.”
