The C-130 Hercules transport plane, crewed by three women, will be flanked by two Typhoon fighter jets as they fly over Wembley Stadium ahead of England’s historic match against Germany.
The plane will take off at 4:57 p.m., shortly after the national anthems before kick-off. The Hercules will fly from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and the two Typhoons will fly from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
Defense Minister Ben Wallace said.
Good luck to the Lions when they take on Germany at Wembley.
It’s a landmark day for English football and women’s sport and it’s fantastic that the Royal Air Force will be marking the occasion with a flyer featuring the female crew.
Hercules is commanded by Flight Lieutenant Loren, who has been in the Air Force for 12 years. She has been deployed around the world, including Afghanistan, where she helped train the first Afghan female pilots.
Speaking about the flying rocket, Flight Lieutenant Lorraine said:
I am proud to fly the lead aircraft for the flight over Wembley. I have flown all over the world with the RAF but this will be one of the most memorable. It’s inspiring to watch the Lions progress and I’ll be cheering them on loudly as soon as I’m back at RAF Brize Norton.
Ahead of the match, the RAF and RAF Coningsby Station Women’s Football Teams have sent a message of good luck to the Lions.
The Hercules aircraft performs a wide variety of operational missions, including the delivery of humanitarian aid, with the ability to drop a variety of stores from the air and can operate from natural surface landing zones. To accomplish these missions, it is critical that the Hercules crew be highly proficient in low-level flight. More recently, the planes have supported NATO exercises in Eastern Europe by airdropping supplies to troops on the ground.
The Typhoon Fighter Ground Reconnaissance Mk 4 (FGR4) is the RAF’s fourth-generation multirole combat aircraft. The Typhoon provides rapid response alert for crews on 24/7 readiness in support of the United Kingdom and the aircraft flew daily NATO air policing missions in Eastern Europe.
