Marina Diamandis has never completely nailed her place in pop. It’s too sophisticated for an indie audience to be too eccentric to become mainstream. Despite breaking the album charts at Electra Heart in 2012, she never became a popular name.
Now LA-based Welsh singer and keyboardist is once again in her unpredictable best condition with her fifth album, which strikes a balance between shiny pop and more eclectic culinary.
As always, there’s a gear change from her previous effort, Love + Fear in 2019. This is a double album released in doubles every three weeks.
Originally played as Marina & The Diamonds, the singer is always a chameleon and regularly updates the sound. AncientDreamsIn A Modern Land removes much of her old theatrical character and makes it more honest and open.
35-year-old Diamandis claimed this as her “feminine” album. Like Love + Fear, it’s two half records, but this time it arrives in a compassionate, single package.
The first part is full of catchy choruses and relates to the world outside her window.
The second is dominated by sorrowful ballads, dealing with broken romance.

In line with the album’s feminine perspective, the singer co-produced 6 out of 10 songs with multi-instrumentalist Jennifer de Silveo.
