Royal Mail plans to lay off up to 6,000 people by August.business news

Royal Mail has announced that it will begin the process of making 5,000 to 6,000 roles redundant by next August.

The announcement, which was made in an update to a deal by the postal service’s parent company, has been blamed on industrial action by Royal Mail workers, slow productivity improvements and a decline in parcel volumes.

Parent company International Distributions Services plc said it lost £219m in the first half of the financial year.

About £70m of that loss was due to the ‘direct adverse effects’ of the three days of industrial action.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), representing Royal Mail workers, were on strike over wages and working conditions.

About 115,000 Royal Mail staff walked out over pay and working conditions in what the CWU said was the largest nationwide strike of any sector this year.

A strike is effective for 21 days.

Commenting on the announcement, CWU Executive Director Dave Ward said: For gig economy style parcel delivery.

“What the company should do is abandon its asset-stripping strategy and build the future by leveraging the competitive edge it already has in delivering to 32 million addresses nationwide.

“CWU has called an emergency meeting with the board, at which an alternative business plan will be proposed.

“This announcement demands a ransom from postal workers for taking legal industrial action against workers, customers, or Royal Mail’s future business approach that is not in their best interest. It’s not the way.”
