Iranian embassy protest: 12 arrested and 5 police officers ‘severely injured’ | UK | News

Violence erupted in a mostly peaceful protest at the Iranian embassy in London on Sunday. Police were stationed at SW7’s Princess Gate to oversee the protests after several days of large peaceful rallies in the area.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that the majority of protesters were “responsible”.

However, “the key groups that arrived tried to aggressively confront the dissenting groups of police officers and protesters.”

Officers were later assisted by security forces wearing helmets, shields and other protective gear after reports surfaced that missiles had been hurled at them.

A video shared on social media shows protesters charging at police, who yelled “Go back!”

London Metropolitan Police said:

The chaos that broke out at the Iranian embassy continued at the sites of the English Islamic Center at Marble Arch and Maida Vale.

Police officers successfully secured the building, but again faced attacks.
