A nine-year-old boy died after being hit by a lightning strike while playing soccer in Blackpool, police said.
Police officers were called to the sportsfield on School Road in Blackpool shortly after 5 pm yesterday to report that the child was injured.
According to police, the investigation is ongoing, but at this point, “the boy thinks he has been struck by lightning.”
An ambulance crew attended and he was taken to the hospital, but sadly died after a while.
Det Supt Nick Connaughton of the Lancashire Police said: “This is a truly catastrophic event, and our thoughts are truly grateful to the boy’s family and friends who died during this very sad and tragic time.”
The boy is believed to have participated in a one-on-one training session with the Spirit of Youth FC when he was beaten. The Blackpool Gazette reports.
In a statement posted online, the Spirit of Youth Junior Football Club said:
“The tragic event happened at our home ground on the Common Edge stadium, but not at the club’s training session.
“As a club, we are deeply traumatized and extend our deepest condolences to the boy’s family.
“The Spirit of Youth is a family and we are well established in the community. We provide all the support we need for both the family and the people who were with him at the time.
