London: [UK]April 2 (ANI / Sputnik). The Westminster Magistrate’s Court of the United Kingdom will rule on the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States on April 20.

The Westminster Magistrates’ Court will make a decision on the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States on Wednesday, April 20. [UK Home Secretary Priti Patel] for approval. “Assange’s defense will submit documents to Patel (deadline May 18),” WikiLeaks wrote on Twitter.

Assange has been held in the Belmarsh Strict Prison in south-east London since October 2020 after serving an 11-month sentence for violating bail. In December 2021, the Supreme Court of London ruled in favor of Assange’s extradition to the United States, overturning an earlier ruling that an Australian journalist could not be extradited to the United States because of health or inhumane conditions he could face in the US prison system.

Assange is wanted by the United States on espionage charges after WikiLeaks released thousands of classified documents that shed light on the atrocities committed by US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Assange could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted in US court. (ANI / Sputnik)
