However she was dropped from the show comparing French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to a ‘golliwog’ during a break in filming, leaving fellow guest Jo Brand and hosts Adrian Chiles and Christine Lampard ‘aghast’.

Carol hit back telling The Guardian at the time: ‘I stand by what I said. I wasn’t going to apologise. I never meant it in a racist way. It was shorthand. I described someone’s appearance colloquially – someone I happen to greatly admire.’

Since then her TV career has all but dried up, however she still offers her services as an after dinner speaker.

She is said to now divide her time between Klosters, Switzerland and Spain, where she lives with her ski-instruction husband Marco Glass.

In 2015 she was back in the headlines two years after her mother’s death, after placing the late Prime Minister’s items up for auction and making a whopping £4.5M.
